After a 20-year hiatus, Barbara Lewis, best known for her
mid-1960's chart hits "HELLO STRANGER" "MAKE ME YOUR BABY,and
"BABY I'M YOURS" has returned to live performing.
Lewis has once again launched her career from her home state of
Michigan where she resided and enjoyed anonynmity since leaving
the music business in the early 1970's. She now lives in the
Orlando, FL. area. To her millions of fans, Lewis's rekindled
enthusiasm to sing her hits again is a new beginning that will
not go on unnoticed.
Barbara's first recording session was at the then new Chess
Recording Studio in Chicago. That initial session produced the
Barbara Lewis composition "MY HEART WENT DO DAT DA" which
enjoyed considerable success in 1962. From the second recording
came "MY MAMA TOLD ME", and "TILL THE END OF TIME", both written
by Barbara. About six months later Barbara wrote "SEIOO BOP SHOO
BOP", later called "HELLO STRANGER", "THINK A LITTLE SUGAR", and
"PUPPY LOVE". Another Chicago recording session was scheduled
with the Dells supplying background vocals on "HELLO STRANGER",
which soared to the top of the national charts to become #1 R&B
and #3 POP in 1964.
The following year "BABY I'M YOURS" was recorded in New York at
Atlantic Studio. It became a major hit during the summer of 1965
peaking at #5 on the R&B chart, and #11 on the pop chart. Today
it remains popular and receives solid air play having emerged as
a '60s standard. Another single from her next New York session
was the Top 10 R&B hit "MAKE ME YOUR BABY",which went almost as
high on the POP chart.
Barbara Lewis' biggest chart hit from 1966 "MAKE ME BELONG TO
YOU"' was also recorded in New York, and it was another Top 40
that summer.
While her recording career spanned slightly less than a decade,
there were a series of Atlantic Records singles, and albums of
her material.
Barbara Lewis divorced herself completely from the music
business in the early '70s.
However, for Barbara Lewis, the time is now. With two grammy
nominations to her credit, Barbara Lewis IS BACK! Hotter than
ever before she has gained a new maturity, making her voice one
smooth silky sensation.
Working from Michigan to Cleveland, Ohio (where she was given an
award by Voice Of America for her outstanding contribution to
the world through music) to the Greek Theater in Los Angeles,
where she left them standing in awe....the Flamingo Hilton Hotel
Casino, in Laughlin, Nevada to night after night standing
ovations....to Boston to a 30 -thousand plus crowd, again to a
standing ovation ....to Phonex, Arizona and San Francisco, again
to standing ovations and to England just to name a few, has
placed her among the most sought after performers of that era,
male or female.
Barbara Lewis is also a featured songstress on the original
soundtrack from the 1995 Clint Eastwood\Merle Streep movie
"BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY" as in the film itself. She is
singing one of her hit recordings, "BABY l'M YOURS'.
In addition to the aforementioned recordings, other Barbara
Lewis chart records include:
"STRAIGHTEN UP YOUR HEART" 1963
"SNAP YOUR FINGERS" 1963
"DON'T FORGET ABOUT ME" 1966
"BABY WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO" 1966
"I'LL MAKE HIM LOVE ME" 1967
Barbara Lewis is definitely back, ready and able to be even more
spectacular than before. So sit back and be one of the crowd.
